Seborrheic Dermatitis

Contact Us

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that consists of red itchy skin with yellow scaling on the scalp, eyebrows, ears and around the folds of the mouth and nose. Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic condition that can last for years and requires treatment to improve symptoms. Seborrheic dermatitis can affect people of any age including infants and older adults. It is thought that seborrheic dermatitis is caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin and an excess of oil production.

Infants often have dermatitis on the scalp commonly referred to as “cradle cap.” Cradle cap is a harmless condition that is not contagious and normally resolves on its own within a few months.

In children and adults, seborrheic dermatitis normally appears on the scalp, ears, folds around the mouth, and brows. When this condition flares, it can be very uncomfortable and requires treatment from a dermatology professional to improve symptoms. Treatment options include prescription shampoos, prescription topical creams and in severe cases, oral antifungal medications.
