What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a skin disorder which consists of cysts or “boils” commonly occurring in the underarms, groin area and under the breasts. It can also affect skin on the back, neck and scalp, buttocks and trunk. It begins on any area of the skin where skin touches skin, such as skin folds. This is a chronic condition that can last for years and requires treatment to improve symptoms. Cysts can become red, hot, itchy, painful and can leak fluid – leaving scars or red patches after they heal. Hidradenitis suppurativa usually develops in people between the ages of 15 and 30, but it can occur at any time, and it is more commonly found in females or those with a family history of it.

How do I tell if I have hidradenitis suppurativa?

The dermatology professionals at Modern Dermatology of KY can evaluate your skin condition and determine if you suffer from hidradenitis suppurativa.

What are the treatments?

Treatment options include antibiotic therapy, corticosteroid injections and biologic injections such as Humira. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent painful cysts from evolving further. Treatment can prevent new cysts from forming as well as treat current cysts.
